Roast Potatoes Information & Recipes

The roast potato is one of the most loved British dishes, with many people having their own special hints and tips to achieving the perfect roasties.

In the quest to find the perfect roast potatoes, lovepotatoes.co.uk commissioned independent tests and tastings on over 85 bags* of potatoes in small batches to find the optimum time and method of tatty cooking for the modern cook.

The research compared the performance of a range of cooking oils - from olive, sunflower and rapeseed oils and goose fat to the on-trend coconut and avocado oils. The research used the Rolls Royce of potatoes, the Maris Piper, but King Edwards also make fluffy roasties.

The results showed that:

  • For the optimum crispiness and crunch, two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil and a 45 minute cooking time was recommended (per 1.5kg of potatoes
  • If you want to cook speedy roasties, ready in just 35 minutes, opt for coconut oil, which also gives a sweeter taste
  • Roasties cooked in rapeseed oil gives the lowest saturated fat content 
    Even though it’s the favourite of celeb chefs, goose fat roasties resulted in the least crispy crust (although you do get the fluffiest inside)

The research, which was commissioned by lovepotatoes.co.uk, the body representing British potato farmers, aimed to scientifically prove the best roasting method once and for all, to enable home cooks get the best out of their potatoes.
