St. Patrick’s Day Potato, Bacon & Cabbage Gratin

A tasty family feast recipe using some essential Irish-style ingredients including potato, bacon and cabbage. Easy to cook in bulk for all your friends and family! 

  1. Heat the oven to 200°C, 180°C fan.
  2. Parboil the potatoes for five minutes then drain using a colander. Once cooled, thinly slice the potatoes and set aside.
  3. Wilt the cabbage, season well and stir in the bacon or ham hock.
  4. Heat the cream, butter and garlic until hot in a saucepan. Season and set aside.
  5. In a gratin dish, layer the potatoes, cheese, ham and cabbage, finish with a layer of potatoes and a sprinkle of breadcrumbs, Cheddar, Parmesan and parsley.
  6. Bake in the oven for 25 minutes until golden on top.
  7. Serve immediately.


600g smooth potatoes, e.g Desiree

500g sweetheart cabbage, shredded

220g cooked bacon or ham hock, shredded

550 ml double cream

1 tablespoon butter

1 clove of garlic

20g breadcrumbs

150g low fat Cheddarcheese

10g Parmesancheese, grated

1 tablespoon freshly chopped parsley
